Wizkids have done a deal with Fantasy Flight to bring out a miniature game set for Star Trek using their X-Wing rules – Attack Wing. This is a fast paced tactical space combat game, the starter set features pre-painted ships from the Star Trek Universe:
USS Enterprise-D – Galaxy-class- IKS Maht-H’a – Vor’cha-class
- IRW Khazara – Romulan D’deridex-class
You play as commanders representing legendary captains of the Federation, Klingon Empire and Romulan Empire as you fight ship to ship in tactical space combat – Jean-Luc Picard, Nu-Daq & Toreth. You have the ability to customise and upgrade your ship with crew, weapons and tech upgrades. As well as assign famous crewmembers to your fleets – Geordi La Forge, Miles O’Brien, Konmel & Bochra. Each fleet will have its own special stats, abilities and unique manoeuvres available to them only.
There a series of rounds, where each round you undertake the following 4 phases:
- Planning Phase – each player secretly chooses a manoeuvre for each of his ships using that ships’ Manoeuvre dial.
- Activation Phase – here you reveal and execute the manoeuvre. You can then undertake one Action – an evasive manoeuvre, scan, battle stations, cloak or acquire target lock.
- Combat Phase – each ship may perform an attack against an enemy ship that is inside its firing range.
- End Phase – there are a series of activities that are performed at the end of the round in regarding to shield, scan and clock tokens.
This game utilises the FlightPath manoeuvre system as featured in Star Wars X-Wing Miniatures game and other Fantasy Flight Games. Wizkids have further developed the mechanics by allowing more flexibility with interchangeable pilots.
In the main gameplay, the player who destroys all of his opponent’s ships wins the game! Once you become experienced with the game there are advanced rules to further develop the gameplay – encounter planets, build custom squads and play unique missions that have their own victory conditions. There’s certainly plenty to keep you busy playing with friends time and again. Especially as more ships from more races are released, which allow bigger battles between more teams, whether in alliance or one great free for all!
This is the starter set that contains all you need to play the game with 2 or 3 players. Note it is not played on a board instead requires a flat surface with at least 3” by 3” space. While the ships may not be as detailed as the X-Wing ships, there is greater flexibility in that captains are not limited by what ships they can command. Plus you can have crew and weapons from other teams (though there is an added in game cost for this) allowing for greater variety in the gameplay. Then there’s the added bonus of being able to expand the game as more ships and more races are released. The game is aimed for ages 14 upwards and can be played in approx. 30 mins, though this will be longer if you add more ships.
