Fantasy Flight Games have released a new much updated version of the Warhammer Diskwars that is a tactical battle game, where it is set amid the constant warfare of the Old World. The gameplay is fast-paced, fierce tabletop battles using disks. These disks represent heroes and units from armies across the Old World. During the game, each player uses these disks by flipping them end over end to move them across the battlefield and to position them for attacks. There are 4 armies represented by different colour disks:
- Orcs
- Chaos Daemons
- High Elves
- Empire
Each disk has its own combat stats, traits and special abilities as shown in the Disk Anatomy image. This making it easy to know how your units will engage with others as you do battle!
It is possible for players’ disks to overlap one another, where the top disk is known within the gameplay as “pinning” the disk below it. This prevents the disk being pinned down from being moved and at the end of the round the 2 players must fight each other to battle it out. Here’s where your tactical, strategic nous is required as you’ll need to be able to cleverly manoeuvre your disks to pin down your opponents and defeat them in battles. By doing so you’ll be able to take control of the battlefield and win the game!
In setup players drew 2 types of cards – terrain and objective cards. Terrain cards gives you 2 different options, where you would choose the option that you believe would give you the most advantage on the battlefield. The objective card stats the conditions you need to meet to become victorious. This is kept hidden from the other players, as each player will have their own secret objective. These objectives will require you to have tactical flexibility as they encourage players to battle early on in the game and often. This keeping the gameplay focused on combat throughout it.
Fantasy Flight Games have moved away from the blind buying model of the original disc wars, with the new version containing everything you need to get you started in the game. It contains terrain cards, objectives, command cards and disks for each of the armies. As this is the core set we expect to see expansions including more races and possibly extra units, but you will know what you are buying, instead of randomly hoping as one used to have to with the blind buy sets of the past. The battlefields rules have also been further developed and updated to ensure players have to make choices every game that will have a real impact on their strategy and tactics. This making the gameplay experience different each time it is played, in doing so increasing the replayability of the game with friends.
This tactical battle game is for 2 to 4 players, from ages 14 upwards and can be played within an hour. Could you become a victorious commander and become a legend in Warhammer Diskwars? Available to buy here
